Jeremías 49

1
Of the children of Ammon. Thus saith HaShem: Hath Israel no sons? Hath he no heir? Why then doth Malcam take possession of Gad, and his people dwell in the cities thereof?
ΤΟΙΣ ΥΙΟΙΣ ἈΜΜΩΝ οὕτως εἶπε Κύριος, μὴ υἱοὶ οὐκ εἰσὶν ἐν Ἰσραὴλ, ἢ παραληψόμενος οὐκ ἔστιν αὐτοῖς; διατί παρέλαβε Μελχὸλ τὴν Γαλαὰδ, καὶ ὁ λαὸς αὐτῶν ἐν πόλεσιν αὐτῶν ἐνοικήσει;
Concerning the sons of Ammon thus saith the Lord, Are there no sons in Israel? or have they no one to succeed [them]? wherefore has Milcom inherited Gilead, and why shall their people dwell in their cities?
2
Therefore, behold, the days come, saith HaShem, that I will cause an alarm of war to be heard against Rabbah of the children of Ammon; and it shall become a desolate mound, and her daughters shall be burned with fire; then shall Israel dispossess them that did dispossess him, saith HaShem.
Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will cause to be heard in Rabbah a tumult of wars; and they shall become a waste and ruined place, and her altars shall be burned with fire; then shall Israel succeed to his dominion.
3
Wail, O Heshbon, for Ai is undone; cry, ye daughters of Rabbah, gird you with sackcloth; lament, and run to and fro among the folds; for Malcam shall go into captivity, his priests and his princes together.
Howl, O Heshbon, for Ai has perished; cry, ye daughters of Rabbah, gird yourselves with sackcloth, and lament; for Milcom shall go into banishment, his priests and his princes together.
4
Wherefore gloriest thou in the valleys, thy flowing valley, O backsliding daughter? that didst trust in thy treasures: 'Who shall come unto me?'
Τί ἀγαλλιᾶσθε ἐν τοῖς πεδίοις Ἐνακεὶμ, θύγατερ ἰταμίας, ἡ πεποιθυῖα ἐπὶ θησαυροῖς, ἡ λέγουσα, τίς εἰσελεύσεται ἐπʼ ἐμέ;
Why do ye exult in the plains of the Enakim, thou haughty daughter, that trustest in [thy] treasures, that sayest, Who shall come in to me?
5
Behold, I will bring a terror upon thee, saith the L-rd GOD of hosts, from all that are round about thee; and ye shall be driven out every man right forth, and there shall be none to gather up him that wandereth.
Behold, I [will] bring terror upon thee, saith the Lord, from all the country round about thee; and ye shall be scattered every one right before him, and there is none to gather you.
6
But afterward I will bring back the captivity of the children of Ammon, saith HaShem.
7
Of Edom. Thus saith HaShem of hosts: Is wisdom no more in Teman? Is counsel perished from the prudent? Is their wisdom vanished?
Concerning Edom, thus saith the Lord; There is no longer wisdom in Tema, counsel has perished from the wise ones, their wisdom is gone,
8
Flee ye, turn back, dwell deep, O inhabitants of Dedan; for I do bring the calamity of Esau upon him, the time that I shall punish him.
their place has been deceived. Dig deep for a dwelling, ye that inhabit Dedan, for he has wrought grievously: I brought trouble upon him in the time at which I visited him.
9
If grape-gatherers came to thee, would they not leave some gleaning grapes? if thieves by night, would they not destroy till they had enough?
For grape-gatherers are come, who shall not leave thee a remnant; as thieves by night, they shall lay their hand upon [thy possessions].
10
But I have made Esau bare, I have uncovered his secret places, and he shall not be able to hide himself; his seed is spoiled, and his brethren, and his neighbours, and he is not.
For I have stripped Esau, I have uncovered their secret places; they shall have no power to hide themselves, they have perished [each] by the hand of his brother, my neighbor, and it is impossible
11
Leave thy fatherless children, I will rear them, and let thy widows trust in Me.
for thy fatherless one to be left to live, but I shall live, and the widows trust in me.
12
For thus saith HaShem: Behold, they to whom it pertained not to drink of the cup shall assuredly drink; and art thou he that shall altogether go unpunished? thou shalt not go unpunished, but thou shalt surely drink.
For thus saith the Lord; They who were not appointed to drink the cup have drunk [it]; and thou shalt by no means be cleared:
13
For I have sworn by Myself, saith HaShem, that Bozrah shall become an astonishment, a reproach, a waste, and a curse; and all the cities thereof shall be perpetual wastes.
for by myself I have sworn, saith the Lord, that thou shalt be in the midst of her an impassable [land], and a reproach, and a curse; and all her cities shall be desert forever.
14
I have heard a message from HaShem, and an ambassador is sent among the nations: 'Gather yourselves together, and come against her, and rise up to the battle.'
I have heard a report from the Lord, and he has sent messengers to the nations, [saying], Assemble yourselves, and come against her; rise ye up to war.
15
For, behold, I make thee small among the nations, and despised among men.
I have made thee small among the nations, utterly contemptible among men.
16
Thy terribleness hath deceived thee, even the pride of thy heart, O thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, that holdest the height of the hill; though thou shouldest make thy nest as high as the eagle, I will bring thee down from thence, saith HaShem.
Thine insolence has risen up against thee, the fierceness of thy heart has burst the holes of the rocks, it has seized upon the strength of a lofty hill; for as an eagle he set his nest on high: thence will I bring thee down.
17
And Edom shall become an astonishment; every one that passeth by it shall be astonished and shall hiss at all the plagues thereof.
And Edom shall be a desert: everyone that passes by shall hiss at it.
18
As in the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighbour cities thereof, saith HaShem, no man shall abide there, neither shall any son of man dwell therein.
As Sodom was overthrown and Gomorrah and they that sojourned in her, saith the Lord Almighty, no man shall dwell there, nor shall any son of man inhabit there.
19
Behold, he shall come up like a lion from the thickets of the Jordan against the strong habitation; for I will suddenly make him run away from it, and whoso is chosen, him will I appoint over it; for who is like Me? and who will appoint Me a time? and who is that shepherd that will stand before Me?
Ἰδοὺ ὥσπερ λέων ἀναβήσεται ἐκ μέσου τοῦ Ἰορδάνου εἰς τόπον Αἰθὰμ, ὅτι ταχὺ ἐκδιώξω αὐτοὺς ἀπʼ αὐτῆς, καὶ τοὺς νεανίσκους ἐπʼ αὐτὴν ἐπιστήσατε· ὅτι τίς ὥσπερ ἐγώ; καὶ τίς ἀντιστήσεταί μοι; καὶ τίς οὗτος ποιμὴν, ὃς στήσεται κατὰ πρόσωπόν μου;
Behold, he shall come up as a lion out of the midst of Jordan to the place of Aetham: for I will speedily drive them from it, and do ye set the young men against her: for who is like me? and who will withstand me? and who [is] this shepherd, who shall confront me?
20
Therefore hear ye the counsel of HaShem, that He hath taken against Edom; and His purposes, that He hath purposed against the inhabitants of Teman: surely the least of the flock shall drag them away, surely their habitation shall be appalled at them.
Therefore hear ye the counsel of the Lord, which he has framed against Edom; and his device, which he has devised against the inhabitants of Teman: surely the least of the sheep shall be swept off; surely their dwelling shall be made desolate for them.
21
The earth quaketh at the noise of their fall; there is a cry, the noise whereof is heard in the Red Sea.
For at the sound of their fall the earth was scared, and the cry of the sea was not heard.
22
Behold, he shall come up and swoop down as the vulture, and spread out his wings against Bozrah; and the heart of the mighty men of Edom at that day shall be as the heart of a woman in her pangs.
Behold, he shall look [upon her] as an eagle, and spread forth [his] wings over her strongholds; and the heart of the mighty men of Edom shall be in that day as the heart of a woman in her pangs.
23
Of Damascus. Hamath is ashamed, and Arpad; for they have heard evil tidings, they are melted away; there is trouble in the sea; it cannot be quiet.
Concerning Damascus. Hamath is brought to shame, and Arpad: for they have heard an evil report: they are amazed, they are angry, they shall be utterly unable to rest.
24
Damascus is waxed feeble, she turneth herself to flee, and trembling hath seized on her; anguish and pangs have taken hold of her, as of a woman in travail.
Damascus is utterly weakened, she is put to flight; trembling has seized upon her.
25
'How is the city of praise left unrepaired, the city of my joy?'
Πῶς οὐχὶ ἐγκατέλιπε πόλιν ἐμὴν, κώμην ἠγάπησαν;
How has she not left my city, they have loved the village?
26
Therefore her young men shall fall in her broad places, and all the men of war shall be brought to silence in that day, saith HaShem of hosts.
Therefore shall the young men fall in thy streets, and all thy warriors shall fall, saith the Lord.
27
And I will kindle a fire in the wall of Damascus, and it shall devour the palaces of Ben-hadad.
And I will kindle a fire in the wall of Damascus, and it shall devour the streets of the son of Hadad.
28
Of Kedar, and of the kingdoms of Hazor, which Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon smote. Thus saith HaShem: Arise ye, go up against Kedar, and spoil the children of the east.
Concerning Kedar the queen of the palace, whom Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon smote, thus saith the Lord; Arise ye, and go up to Kedar, and fill the sons of Kedem.
29
Their tents and their flocks shall they take, they shall carry away for themselves their curtains, and all their vessels, and their camels; and they shall proclaim against them a terror on every side.
They shall take their tents and their sheep, they shall take for themselves their garments, and all their baggage and their camels; and summon ye destruction against them from every side.
30
Flee ye, flit far off, dwell deep, O ye inhabitants of Hazor, saith HaShem; for Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon hath taken counsel against you, and hath conceived a purpose against you.
Flee ye, dig very deep for a dwelling place, ye that dwell in the palace; for the king of Babylon has framed a counsel, and devised a device against you.
31
Arise, get you up against a nation that is at ease, that dwelleth without care, saith HaShem; that have neither gates nor bars, that dwell alone.
Rise up, and go up against a nation settled [and] dwelling at ease, who have no doors, nor bolts, nor bars, [who] dwell alone.
32
And their camels shall be a booty, and the multitude of their cattle a spoil; and I will scatter unto all winds them that have the corners polled; and I will bring their calamity from every side of them, saith HaShem.
And their camels shall be a spoil, and the multitude of their cattle shall be destroyed: and I will scatter them as chaff with every wind, having their hair cut about their foreheads, I will bring on their overthrow from all sides, saith the Lord.
33
And Hazor shall be a dwelling-place of jackals, a desolation for ever; no man shall abide there, neither shall any son of man dwell therein.
And the palace shall be a resting place for ostriches, and desolate forever: no man shall abide there, and no son of man shall dwell there.
34
The word of HaShem that came to Jeremiah the prophet concerning Elam in the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah, saying:
The prophecies of Jeremiah against the nations of Elam.
In the beginning of the reign of King Zedekiah, there came this word concerning Elam.
35
Thus saith HaShem of hosts: behold, I will break the bow of Elam the chief of their might.
Thus saith the Lord, The bow of Elam is broken, [even] the chief of their power.
36
And I will bring against Elam the four winds from the four quarters of heaven, and will scatter them toward all those winds; and there shall be no nation whither the dispersed of Elam shall not come.
And I will bring upon Elam the four winds from the four corners of heaven, and I will disperse them toward all these winds; and there shall be no nation [to] which they shall not come—[even] the outcasts of Elam.
37
And I will cause Elam to be dismayed before their enemies, and before them that seek their life; and I will bring evil upon them, even My fierce anger, saith HaShem; and I will send the sword after them, till I have consumed them;
And I will put them in fear before their enemies that seek their life; and I will bring evils upon them according to my great anger; and I will send forth my sword after them, until I have utterly destroyed them.
38
And I will set My throne in Elam, and will destroy from thence king and princes, saith HaShem.
And I will set my throne in Elam, and will send forth thence king and rulers.
39
But it shall come to pass in the end of days, that I will bring back the captivity of Elam, saith HaShem.
But it shall come to pass at the end of days, that I will turn the captivity of Elam, saith the Lord.

JPS 1917 — The Holy Scriptures according to the Masoretic Text

1–36, siglo III a.
