Jeremia 36

1
And it came to pass in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, that this word came unto Jeremiah from HaShem, saying:
In the fourth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah, the word of the Lord came to me, saying,
2
'Take thee a roll of a book, and write therein all the words that I have spoken unto thee against Israel, and against Judah, and against all the nations, from the day I spoke unto thee, from the days of Josiah, even unto this day.
Take thee a roll of a book, and write upon it all the words which I spoke to thee against Jerusalem, and against Judah, and against all the nations, from the day when I spoke to thee, from the days of Josiah king of Judah, even to this day.
3
It may be that the house of Judah will hear all the evil which I purpose to do unto them; that they may return every man from his evil way, and I may forgive their iniquity and their sin.'
Perhaps the house of Judah will hear all the evils which I purpose to do to them; that they may turn from their evil way; and [so] I will be merciful to their iniquities and their sins.
4
Then Jeremiah called Baruch the son of Neriah; and Baruch wrote from the mouth of Jeremiah all the words of HaShem, which He had spoken unto him, upon a roll of a book.
So Jeremiah called Baruch the son of Neriah: and he wrote from the mouth of Jeremiah all the words of the Lord, which he had spoken to him, on a roll of a book.
5
And Jeremiah commanded Baruch, saying: 'I am detained, I cannot go into the house of HaShem;
And Jeremiah commanded Baruch, saying, I am in prison; I cannot enter into the house of the Lord:
6
therefore go thou, and read in the roll, which thou hast written from my mouth, the words of HaShem in the ears of the people in HaShem'S house upon a fast-day; and also thou shalt read them in the ears of all Judah that come out of their cities.
so thou shalt read in this roll in the ears of the people in the house of the Lord, on the fast day; and in the ears of all Judah that come out of their cities, thou shalt read to them.
7
It may be they will present their supplication before HaShem, and will return every one from his evil way; for great is the anger and the fury that HaShem hath pronounced against this people.'
Peradventure their supplication will come before the Lord, and they will turn from their evil way: for great is the wrath and the anger of the Lord, which he has pronounced against this people.
8
And Baruch the son of Neriah did according to all that Jeremiah the prophet commanded him, reading in the book the words of HaShem in HaShem'S house.
And Baruch did according to all that Jeremiah commanded him—reading in the book the words of the Lord in the Lord’s house.
9
Now it came to pass in the fifth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, in the ninth month, that they proclaimed a fast before HaShem, all the people in Jerusalem, and all the people that came from the cities of Judah unto Jerusalem.
And it came to pass in the eighth year of King Jehoiakim, in the ninth month, all the people in Jerusalem, and the house of Judah, proclaimed a fast before the Lord.
10
Then did Baruch read in the book the words of Jeremiah in the house of HaShem, in the chamber of Gemariah the son of Shaphan the scribe, in the upper court, at the entry of the new gate of HaShem'S house, in the ears of all the people.
And Baruch read in the book the words of Jeremiah in the house of the Lord, in the house of Gemariah son of Shaphan the scribe, in the upper court, in the entrance of the new gate of the house of the Lord, and in the ears of all the people.
11
And when Micaiah the son of Gemariah, the son of Shaphan, had heard out of the book all the words of HaShem,
And Micaiah the son of Gemariah the son of Shaphan heard all the words of the Lord, out of the book.
12
he went down into the king's house, into the scribe's chamber; and, lo, all the princes sat there, even Elishama the scribe, and Delaiah the son of Shemaiah, and Elnathan the son of Achbor, and Gemariah the son of Shaphan, and Zedekiah the son of Hananiah, and all the princes.
And he went down to the king’s house, into the house of the scribe: and, behold, there were sitting there all the princes, Elishama the scribe, and Delaiah the son of Shemaiah, and Elnathan the son of Achbor, and Gemariah the son of Shaphan, and Zedekiah the son of Hananiah, and all the princes.
13
Then Micaiah declared unto them all the words that he had heard, when Baruch read the book in the ears of the people.
And Micaiah reported to them all the words which he had heard Baruch reading in the ears of the people.
14
Therefore all the princes sent Jehudi the son of Nethaniah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Cushi, unto Baruch, saying: 'Take in thy hand the roll wherein thou hast read in the ears of the people, and come.' So Baruch the son of Neriah took the roll in his hand, and came unto them.
And all the princes sent to Baruch son of Neriah Jehudi the son of Nethaniah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Cushi, saying, Take in thy hand the roll in which thou readest in the ears of the people, and come. So Baruch took the roll, and went down to them.
15
And they said unto him: 'Sit down now, and read it in our ears.' So Baruch read it in their ears.
And they said to him, Read [it] again in our ears. And Baruch read [it].
16
Now it came to pass, when they had heard all the words, they turned in fear one toward another, and said unto Baruch: 'We will surely tell the king of all these words.'
And it came to pass, when they [had] heard all the words, [that] they took counsel each with his neighbor, and said, Let us by all means tell the king all these words.
17
And they asked Baruch, saying: 'Tell us now: How didst thou write all these words at his mouth?'
Καὶ τὸν Βαροὺχ ἠρώτησαν, λέγοντες, ποῦ ἔγραψας πάντας τοὺς λόγους τούτους;
And they asked Baruch, saying, Where didst thou write all these words?
18
Then Baruch answered them: 'He pronounced all these words unto me with his mouth, and I wrote them with ink in the book.'
And Baruch said, Jeremiah told me from his [own] mouth all these words, and I wrote them in a book.
19
Then said the princes unto Baruch: 'Go, hide thee, thou and Jeremiah, and let no man know where ye are.'
And they said to Baruch, Go, and hide, thou and Jeremiah; let no man know where ye [are].
20
And they went in to the king into the court; but they had deposited the roll in the chamber of Elishama the scribe; and they told all the words in the ears of the king.
And they went in to the king into the court, and gave the roll [to one] to keep in the house of Elishama; and they told the king all these words.
21
So the king sent Jehudi to fetch the roll; and he took it out of the chamber of Elishama the scribe. And Jehudi read it in the ears of the king, and in the ears of all the princes that stood beside the king.
And the king sent Jehudi to fetch the roll: and he took it out of the house of Elishama: and Jehudi read in the ears of the king, and in the ears of all the princes who stood round the king.
22
Now the king was sitting in the winter-house in the ninth month; and the brazier was burning before him.
Now the king was sitting in the winter house: and [there was] a fire on the hearth before him.
23
And it came to pass, when Jehudi had read three or four columns, that he cut it with the penknife, and cast it into the fire that was in the brazier, until all the roll was consumed in the fire that was in the brazier.
And it came to pass when Jehudi had read three or four leaves, he cut them off with a penknife, and cast [them] into the fire that was on the hearth, until the whole roll was consumed in the fire that was on the hearth.
24
Yet they were not afraid, nor rent their garments, neither the king, nor any of his servants that heard all these words.
And the king and his servants that heard all these words sought not [the Lord], and rent not their garments.
25
Moreover Elnathan and Delaiah and Gemariah had entreated the king not to burn the roll; but he would not hear them.
But Elnathan and Gemariah suggested to the king that he should burn the roll.
26
And the king commanded Jerahmeel the king's son, and Seraiah the son of Azriel, and Shelemiah the son of Abdeel, to take Baruch the scribe and Jeremiah the prophet; but HaShem hid them.
And the king commanded Jerahmeel the king’s son, and Seraiah the son of Azriel, to take Baruch and Jeremiah: but they were hidden.
27
Then the word of HaShem came to Jeremiah, after that the king had burned the roll, and the words which Baruch wrote at the mouth of Jeremiah, saying:
Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah, after the king had burned the roll, [even] all the words which Baruch wrote from the mouth of Jeremiah, saying,
28
'Take thee again another roll, and write in it all the former words that were in the first roll, which Jehoiakim the king of Judah hath burned.
Again take thou another roll, and write all the words that were on the roll, which King Jehoiakim has burned.
29
And concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah thou shalt say: Thus saith HaShem: Thou hast burned this roll, saying: Why hast thou written therein, saying: The king of Babylon shall certainly come and destroy this land, and shall cause to cease from thence man and beast?
καὶ ἐρεῖς, οὕτως εἶπε Κύριος, σὺ κατέκαυσας τὸ χαρτίον τοῦτο, λέγων, διατί ἔγραψας ἐπʼ αὐτῷ, λέγων, εἰσπορευόμενος εἰσπορεύσεται βασιλεὺς Βαβυλῶνος, καὶ ἐξολοθρεύσει τὴν γῆν ταύτην, καὶ ἐκλείψει ἐπʼ αὐτῆς ἄνθρωπος καὶ κτήνη;
And thou shalt say, Thus saith the Lord; Thou hast burned this roll, saying, Why hast thou written therein, saying, The king of Babylon shall certainly come in, and destroy this land, and man and cattle shall fail from off it?
30
Therefore thus saith HaShem concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah: He shall have none to sit upon the throne of David; and his dead body shall be cast out in the day to the heat, and in the night to the frost.
Therefore thus saith the Lord concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah; He shall not have [a man] to sit on the throne of David: and his carcass shall be cast forth in the heat by day, and in the frost by night.
31
And I will visit upon him and his seed and his servants their iniquity; and I will bring upon them, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and upon the men of Judah, all the evil that I have pronounced against them, but they hearkened not.'
And I will visit him, and his family, and his servants: and I will bring upon him, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and upon the land of Judah, all the evils which I spoke of to them; and they hearkened not.

Then took Jeremiah another roll, and gave it to Baruch the scribe, the son of Neriah; who wrote therein from the mouth of Jeremiah all the words of the book which Jehoiakim king of Judah had burned in the fire; and there were added besides unto them many like words.
And Baruch took another roll, and wrote upon it from the mouth of Jeremiah all the words of the book which Jehoiakim had burned: and there were yet more words added to it like the former.

Masoretischer Text — Codex Leningradensis (Westminster-Ausgabe)

Jahrhundert n.

JPS 1917 — The Holy Scriptures according to the Masoretic Text

Ben Sira (Jesus Sirach)
